Mike Hanke's sending off in the 53rd for Monchengladbach gave Mainz some confidence, and it showed when Andre Schurrle slotted home in the 87th minute for the win. In Portugal, Academica managed to tie with Vitoria FC with Miguel Fidalgo scoring in the 38th to give the home side the lead. Then, both teams had players sent-off before Claudio Pitbull struck Vitoria level 1-1 with 9 minutes left before the final whistle.
