Champions League update 12/6/11.

What a day of football action we had today! In Group F Chelsea put 3 past Valencia without reply to solidify their control of the group with 11 points while Bayer Leverkusen's 1-1 draw with Genk was enough to get the Germans into the next round with 10 points. Valencia ended up in 3rd place with 8 points after their loss while Genk had 3 points in 4th. Over in Group F there was quite the final day drama as Arsenal lost to Olympiacos 3-1 in Greece but still got through in 1st place with 11 points. Marseille actually grabbed 2nd after a come-from-behind victory that caught their German hosts Dortmund completely by surprise. Dortmund had led 2-0 by the 32nd minute however their lead was cut to 1 in the 4th minute of stoppage time of the 1st half. 2 more goals for the French side in the last 10 minutes settled the matter. Olympiacos will be disappointed after being snubbed for 2nd, dropping to 3rd with 9 points though they have every right to keep their heads held high. Dortmund on the other hand finished in disgrace with only 4 points. On to Group G now where results were also bizarre! Porto and Zenit St. Petersburg played out a disappointing 0-0 draw in Portugal today with the Russians relying totally on their cornerstone: goal keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev. He faced at least 10 shots today and allowed not one to pass him. Meanwhile, APOEL and Shakhtar Donetsk played out a quite surprising 0-2 affair with the Cypriots actually losing at home! Nonetheless, APOEL progress to the next round while Shakhtar are in 4th with just 5 points. Zenit were able to bring themselves into 2nd with their draw while Porto are pushed (by just 1 point) into 3rd with 8. Finally, Group F also concluded resoundingly with Barcelona blasting BATE 4-0 while Plzen and Milan played out an exciting 2-2 draw. Barca thus finish at the top of the group with an undefeated record and 16 points while AC Milan occupy 2nd with 9. Plzen represented the Czech Republic well, amassing 5 points, as BATE Borisov collected just 2. Look forward to the next round!!!
